    What is it?
2002 Mazda MX-5 Miata Special Edition

    What's special about it?
New Miatas always take their first breath in Chicago, so it's not surprising to see another limited-edition model arrive here in 2002. This latest Miata Special Edition will appeal to those seeking a Miata with one-of-a-kind style and content. If you're looking for performance upgrades, you won't find them here.

For 2002, Mazda will offer its limited-edition Miata in two color schemes — Titanium Gray paint with a deep saddle brown leather interior and Blazing Yellow Mica with a black leather interior. The company proudly pointed out that the latter of the two is the first Miata ever with a black leather interior. We don't doubt that owning a Miata bathed in black hide would give one a special feeling, but one must consider whether it's worth the attention from law enforcement that its sunshiny sheetmetal is sure to command.

Standard features on the Special Edition include a six-speed manual transmission, 16-inch Enkei alloy wheels, a 200-watt Bose sound system with an in-dash six-disc changer, chrome fuel filler door and Special Edition badging. Both interiors are furnished with a two-tone, three-spoke Nardi steering wheel; a Nardi leather shift knob and handbrake lever; white-faced gauges ringed in aluminum; and aluminum pedals, door handles and scuff plates.

    Why should you care?
Mazda will produce just 1,500 Special Edition Miatas in Titanium Gray and just 1,000 in Blazing Yellow Mica. If you want to put an aura of exclusivity on your upcoming Miata purchase, perhaps you should grab one of these. But if driving pleasure is your only priority, any Miata will do. — Erin Riches
