NEW YORK — The Mazda 2, a small and spunky fuel saver, was named 2008 World Car of the Year at the 2008 New York Auto Show on Thursday. Organizers of the award said the Mazda2 edged out the Ford Mondeo and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class to take home the overall award.

The Mazda 2 also was lauded by design experts and ended up in some impressive company, including the Audi R8. "Based on the recommendations of a design panel consisting of four highly respected world design experts, the Mazda 2 was also voted by jurors onto the short list of top three design finalists, together with the Audi R8 and Volvo C30," the judges said in a statement.

The Mazda 2 is known as the Demio in Japan.

The World Car of the Year jury is made up of 47 international auto journalists.
