2009 Tokyo Auto Show Preview: Mazda Sky Engines

TOKYO — Mazda Motor is planning a modest display at the upcoming 2009 Tokyo Auto Show, hosting the Japanese domestic-market debut of last year's Kiyora concept while unveiling its new Sky family of eco-friendly drivetrains.

The Sky series includes the Sky-G direct-injection gasoline engine, the Sky-D clean diesel engine and the Sky Drive automatic transmission. Mazda said it expects to begin phasing in the new powertrains in 2011.

Mazda is using the Kiyora, unveiled last fall at the 2008 Paris Auto Show, to showcase its next-generation safety and environmental technologies. Fitted with a 1.3-liter Sky-G engine and six-speed Sky Drive automatic, as well as such advanced technologies as regenerative braking and an idle-stop system, the Kiyora is projected to deliver fuel economy of up to 75 miles per gallon.

The Kiyora is widely seen as the forerunner of a new Mazda 1 minicar that is planned for 2011-12.

I also like the stunning design, I just hope Mazda doesn't decide to cut the plan due to reactions from the public.
