2008 Moscow Auto Show: Mazda Officially Unveils Kazamai Concept

MOSCOW — Mazda premiered its Kazamai concept crossover vehicle at the 2008 Moscow Auto Show on August 26, showing off a vehicle that was designed with Russians' SUV tastes in mind.

The two-door crossover can seat four passengers and has a four-wheel-drive powertrain, a newly developed transmission and a "next generation" direct injection engine. Exterior cues include flared wheel arches and a wedge-shaped profile. Mazda designers blended aluminum and plastic in this concept with an eye toward weight savings.

The Kazamai is yet another of Mazda's Nagare-themed concepts. The name is Japanese for "swirling crosswinds."

Mazda says the concept signals the company's future direction for a compact crossover vehicle. It may hint at a future CX-5 or future CX-7.

What this means to you: Russians love SUVs, and Mazda tries to lure them into the tent with this intriguing concept. — Anita Lienert and Tai Adelaja, Correspondents
