2007 Mazda CX-9 to replace aging MPV

At first glance we thought this was just another shot of Mazda's upcoming CX-7 crossover. After a little investigation and closer examination of the photos, we think this is actually the slightly larger and more luxurious Mazda CX-9 crossover we've heard rumors about.

Built on a stretched version of the CD3 platform that underpins the Mazda 6 sedan, the CX-9 is expected to have three rows of seats and a price tag closer to $30K. With its seven-passenger capacity, the 2007 CX-9 will replace the MPV in Mazda's lineup.

Power will come from Ford's new 3.5-liter V6. With 250 horsepower and a six-speed transmission, the CX-9 should have solid performance comparable to similar vehicles like the Toyota Highlander and Ford's own 2007 Edge crossover. A slightly larger, more powerful version of this engine may be offered at a later date to position it even further up the price scale. Both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions will be offered when it goes on sale next fall. Expect to see it debut in production form at next year's New York auto show in April.
