For Japan Only: Mazda Biante

HIROSHIMA, Japan — Mazda has released the Biante minivan in the Japan domestic market, with no plans for overseas sales.

In a brief news release, Mazda said the eight-passenger Biante will go on sale in Japan in summer 2008. The name was coined off the English word ambient, a reference to "a unified interior space that contributes to an enjoyable and comfortable in-car experience for all the vehicle's occupants," according to the company.

Mazda said the Biante features "best-in-class interior space, distinctive, athletic styling and superior dynamic performance."

Mazda's last minivan in the U.S., the MPV, was discontinued after the 2006 model year. It currently sells only the Mazda 5 compact van, aimed primarily at younger families and empty-nesters.

What this means to you: Mazda will continue to market only its CX-7 and CX-9 crossover vehicles to larger American families. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
