What is it?
Mazda Activehicle
What's special about it?
The styling is certainly aggressive, but the purpose of the medium-sized Activehicle SUV is urban commuting. Mazda says the interior was designed to give maximum space for occupants and cargo. For power, the Activehicle uses a 200-horsepower V6. In normal conditions, the all-wheel-drive system directs power only to the front wheels. A Rotary Blade Coupling (RBC) center differential automatically diverts power to the rear wheels when road conditions warrant.
Why should you care?
Americans are still consuming SUVs like they were french fries. Yummy! And until some unforeseen event stems the current buying surge (gas crunch, government intervention, big gnarly asteroid), vehicle makers want to be a part of it. As of 2000, Mazda doesn't have a SUV to sell. But it might not be that much longer before it does. The Activehicle concept looks more like a near-production vehicle than a concept.
