LOS ANGELES — The 2012 Mazda 5 will make its North American debut at the upcoming 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show. It will be joined on the Mazda stand by the Shinari concept that was unveiled last month at the 2010 Paris Auto Show.

The redesigned Mazda 5 made its world debut earlier this year at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show.

For the U.S. market, the 2012 Mazda 5 will be offered with a 157-horsepower 2.5-liter MZR four-cylinder engine and a choice of manual or automatic transmission. In overseas markets, the six-passenger compact van is being marketed with either a 1.8- or 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.

The 2012 Mazda 5 is expected to arrive at U.S. dealers next spring.

Yeah we have a 2006 5 and it's a very understated design that looks sporty and interesting. This new one is a bit of a mixed bag. The tail lights are hideous. The interior does look better though. I'm betting the 2.5 engine has a different power curve, remember the numbers don't tell the whole story.

Shinari is making my heart flutter. Jezuz that is a sharp car. As someone else said it is a great poor man's Aston/Maserati. My 2010 Mazda 6 sGT defintely offers some design touches reminiscent of those european supercars but Shinari takes it up a notch and then some. Hopefully the concept's attributes will translate into the cost-concious needs of production.

The first-gen 5 had some edginess that made it appealing.  That's gone on this version.  What's up with the swoopy lines?  With the 1st version, it was as if they were trying to capture the folks who would never buy a minivan but needed the versatility of a minivan.  Now it looks like they're trying to capture the folks who like how minivans look.  Who the heck is that?

I actually saw one of these with the Mazda badges removed on the I-15 around Lake Elsinore.  From afar it looks a lot like the 2nd Gen Toyota Previa that never made to the US.

I guess the earlier posts about the 157 hp were right.  What a shame.  The Ford Fusion gets 175 hp.  What happened to the 18 lost horses?  This has got to be the least powerful 2.5 on the planet.  Zoom zoom?

The 5 doesn't need zoom zoom, it only needs an engine that can haul SEVEN people.

    I like the idea of a Mazda8...

The shinari oddly reminds me of Infiniti's Essence concept...

    But where's the Smile angle?!
The size of the Smile will determine the extent of the sales, imo.

I'm confused as to why this engine only produces 157hp in the 2012 5, when the same engine produces 171 in the Tribute, 170 in the 6 and 167 in the 3?

Canadians "got" the 5, as it's the brand's #2 seller up here, behind the 3.  Mazda is more mainstream brand in GWN, with the 3 often in top-10 sales.  Not sure how well the new version will do, but the "happy face" Mz3 is all over the place, so who knows?
