GENEVA — The redesigned Mazda 5, which will go on sale in Europe later this year, will make its world debut in March at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show. Mazda North American Operations told Inside Line that the car will be shown in the U.S. at the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show and will go on sale here at an unspecified date in 2011.
"There is no firm date as to when it will go on sale in the U.S., but it will be sometime in 2011," Jeremy Barnes, Mazda's U.S. spokesman, told Inside Line in a telephone conversation on Wednesday. "And there is nothing at all I can tell you about the U.S.-spec car [such as pricing or engine choices]. We're a long way from all of that information."
The Mazda 5 bound for Geneva is being described as a 2010 model, according to Mazda's U.K. operations. The Euro-spec model gets a newly developed 2.0-liter direct-injection gasoline engine linked to a six-speed manual transmission. The lineup also includes a 1.8-liter gasoline engine linked to a six-speed manual transmission. The Mazda 5 also features an i-stop idling system that saves fuel.
Mazda's home office said the new Mazda 5 "will be the first Mazda production model to fully adopt Mazda's Nagare design language, which finds inspiration in the beauty of flows found in nature."
It pointed out that the new Mazda 5 gets multiple seat arrangements, including a second-row center seat that can be converted to storage space. Ride has also been improved, the Japanese automaker said.
Inside Line says: We get a sense of how the new Mazda 5 will look, but no details on how the U.S. version will be equipped at this point. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent

It seems as though with the addition of the center seat, the M5 will be able to seat 7 which is a good thing. Trouble is with the underpowered engine oferrings even in 2.3l form. a 7 seater will just not be able to make it in the USA. The c max and orlando will suffer the same fate if they also come on board with substandard motivation.

Styling is a bit over-the-top for me. Great mini minivan though. Wish it were a tad bigger for my family of 5 so I could have more of a choice other than a Honda or Toyota minivan, which are way too big. Smaller is better but the 5 is too small for our needs.

When they would look at the new Odessy, this styling could be made by Mazda to,but they looked at the old one and thought, how can we make this van ugly? See here the result.Drive a Mazda 5 from 2007 and will not by this piece of *#it !Maybe a Ford S-Max when it comes here, stands on the same platform and with a nice powershift automatic.

I guess they added the wavy lines to help makes a family truckster more stylish/cool? Not sure if I'm a fan either, but it's an interesting design concept in a normally staid category.

Yeah, the rear looks like an old Toyota Previa. Not good! Actually makes the old Mazda 5's upright lamps attractive. That said, I think that I kind of dig the flowing lines along the side. It gives the vehicle some visual length while reducing it's visual height. Good stuff!

the rear end is FUGLY. front looks okay and the interior is nice. Overall, i think the current one still looks better.

I liked it more when Mazda had more restrained styling. First get rid of the smiley face front. Then stop making waves on the sides. Last make the next gen 6 a world car so that I may get another 6 wagon.

The decoration down the side seems kinda over the top. They should have found a more subtle way to implement this idea. Besides... this is money that should have gone elsewhere. Sure it'll get noticed more than the current Rondo but... that doesn't mean I would buy it.
Oh well... when the time comes... I'll find a used `09.

I agree with hank39 about the exterior. The pointy instrument cluster visor ruins it for me on the inside, as well.
