Mercedes-Benz gets V8s for 1998

January 5, 1998 -- The fun theme at Mercedes-Benz continues in 1998. Popular club tunes emanating from Mercedes-Benz's youthful display highlighted this company's changing image today at the NAIAS show in Detroit as Mercedes unveiled their 1998 products and concept cars.

Despite the Disneyland-like feeling of youthful happiness that seems to surround Mercedes' employees and products, it would be a mistake to dismiss Germany's most prestigious automaker as childish. Important new cars have been rolling out this Stuttgart-based company's design studios like water off of a Labrador's back.

The focus for 1998 is on performance. Pleased with their new 4.3-liter V8 engine, the bigwigs at M-B have decided to drop the darn thing into nearly every vehicle they offer. This means that your local dealer will be peddling new E430 sedans, CLK 430 coupes, ML430 sport-utes, as well as super-hot C43 sedans developed in conjunction with AMG, one of Germany's most respected tuners. Performance figures for each of these vehicles will be near best in class, certainly enough to give the competition at BMW a few sleepless nights. This year also sees the introduction of a SLK roadster equipped with a 5-speed manual transmission, a concession to those of us in the industry who have griped about the car's automatic slushbox since the vehicle's introduction early last year.

Just so we don't forget that Mercedes-Benz is a luxury manufacturer, the three-pointed star engineers put together a sedan called the Maybach that is more sophisticated and more luxurious than anything else on the road. Powered by a V12 engine and providing rear seat passengers a 21-inch television screen, the Maybach is designed to give its owners the utmost in power and comfort. The Maybach also features a hidden car care storage compartment, a perfect place for the chauffeur to stow his oil and cloth in the event that the Maybach needs a polish while the car's master is attending an important meeting. At this time the Maybach is merely a design study, but Mercedes officials have suggested that the car may have a future as an extremely exclusive vehicle for the world's wealthiest people.
