LONDON — Mexico's first sports car, the Mastretta MXT, will make its official debut on July 22 at the 2008 British Auto Show.

The lightweight rear-wheel-drive two-seater is powered by a mid-mounted supercharged 2.0-liter Duratec from Ford, which lays down 240 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. That helps it sprint to 60 mph in just under 5 seconds and top out at 150 mph. The transmission is a five-speed manual.

It sports a bonded aluminum semi-monocoque chassis and a custom double-wishbone suspension setup in the front and rear.

At just 1,985 pounds, the Mastretta MXT could be considered a direct rival to the peppy and light Lotus Elise.

More than 80 cars are ready for the U.K. market, and the vehicle will go on sale next May at a cost equivalent to $65,919.

What this means to you: The Lotus Elise had better watch out for this sexy and quick sports car from Mexico. — Mike Lysaght, Correspondent
