Maserati Goes for a Swim, Possibly Trying to Wash the Pink Off

FORTE DEI MARMI, Italy — A pair of 50-year-old men were stopped in their tracks by representatives of the coast guard here when they were observed trying to sail a Maserati in the Tyrrhenian Sea off Italy's northwestern coast. The men claimed they were only testing the car, which has the name "Miriam" painted on its rear in white script, just above the outboard motor clipped to the back bumper. Did we mention it is painted a fetching shade of fuchsia?

The men, Marco Amoretti and Marcolino De Candia, reportedly have tried this before, having sailed from the Canary Islands to Martinique in a pair of car boats made from a Volkswagen Passat and a Ford Taurus, Ananova news service reports.

"Miriam" was taken by coast guard officials, and the sailors were fined because of missing documentation of the vessel for use on water and for a lack of required boat safety equipment.

Inside Line says: Perhaps the nice people in the Amphicar owners' club could fix these guys up with a little something to travel in. — Laura Sky Brown, Correspondent
