    Just the Facts:
    • Fiat boss says Jeep-based Maserati SUV will debut in 2012.
    • The SUV may be offered with both V8 and V12 engines.
    • It's expected to be built in the same Detroit plant as Jeep's Grand Cherokee.

DETROIT — The new Jeep-based Maserati that Fiat boss Sergio Marchionne teased last fall will debut in 2012 and will get a "rock 'n' roll" Ferrari engine, according to the CEO.

Speaking with reporters covering the Detroit auto show, Marchionne let slip a few more details on the vehicle, which will be based on the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The Maserati SUV is likely to be assembled in the same Detroit plant as the Grand Cherokee and can accommodate either a Ferrari V8 or V12 — or possibly both.

Prices are likely to range from $80,000-$100,000 or more.

Granted the Cayenne is a little ridiculous, Porsche has really made an SUV worthy of their crest with the latest model. Who's to say Maserati can't do the same?

"An Italian brand built on the Jeep lines in Detroit?  Sounds like a recipe for disaster"

Jefferson North assembly plant (JNAP) was the first US plant to institute the world class manufacturing standard, its truly an amazing place now.

Is there some kind of contest among the European car designers to see who can design the ugliest SUV that we do not know about?

I do not know what is worse. The sheep designers following other sheep designers or sheep buyers following other sheep buyers.

Give me a Denali any day over these contraptions. Make that 2 for the price of one of these.

"ither a Ferrari V8 or V12 - or possibly both"
If they get a V20 in there I really want one (with a service plan).

I need to change jobs to being a Maserati mechanic.

No limit to the work hours required to get 150K to 200K miles out of a Ferrari engine. Much less one moving a 2 ton vehicle pulling boats and driving in mud... Imagine the glorious sound it'll make pulling out stumps.

Oh, forgot, most SUVs carry one person to and from work. So maybe it'll be reliable enough.
