WASHINGTON — Maserati North America is recalling 801 2009 Maserati GranTurismos and Quattroportes in the U.S. and Canada because a defect could cause part of the rear suspension to fail, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
"The rear suspension left-side and right-side wheel alignment toe-in tie-rods may fail due to incorrect machining," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "A failed tie-rod could lead to a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash."
In other documentation filed with the federal government, Maserati said the danger of failure could increase when the cars involved in the recall are driven on rough roads or over potholes. The recall includes vehicles built from July 3, 2008, to September 30, 2008.
Maserati dealers will replace the affected tie-rods, install a tie-rod kit and perform a wheel alignment. The recall is expected to begin in September. Owners can contact Maserati at 1-201-816-2600.
Inside Line says: If you own a 2009 Maserati GranTurismo or Quattroporte, be aware that a recall is in the works.
