WASHINGTON — Maserati is recalling 824 of its GranTurismo cars because a software problem may cause the seatbelt warning buzzer not to work, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The recall affects 2009 models equipped with the optional front parking sensor system, which has "faulty" instrument cluster control module software, said the federal watchdog. The defect "will affect the functionality of the seatbelt warning buzzer's ability to activate, thereby not properly warning when the seatbelts are not engaged," said NHTSA in its recall summary of the problem. "If the buzzer does not sound, you or your passenger may fail to buckle the seatbelts adequately. This could result in greater risk of injury in the event of a crash."

Maserati dealers will upload new software into the vehicle's instrument cluster control module unit. The recall will begin in April. Owners can contact Maserati at (201) 816-2600.
