2003 Maserati Coupe
What's special about it?
Maserati is planning a return to the States this year, and this new coupe version will likely join the Spyder roadster in the revived lineup. A 4.2-liter 390-horsepower V8 provides the power, while two different transmissions, a six-speed manual or a six-speed sequential shift clutchless manual, will take care of the gear changes. An optional Skyhook suspension provides continual damper adjustment for optimum handling, and Brembo-designed brakes inside 18-inch wheels provide the stopping power.
The interior will feature the Maserati Info Center with integrated audio, climate and GPS navigation controls as well as 10 different interior colors for a more customized look. The coupe also offers four-passenger seating, but you wouldn't want to be stuck in back for very long.
Why should you care?
Maserati's return to the States will be met with open arms in places like Beverly Hills and Miami, but interest elsewhere will be slim. Four hundred horsepower in a coupe used to be enough to get people talking, but nowadays you can walk into a Chevrolet dealer and score that for a mere $50,000. The coupe's price is likely to be more like $100,000, quite a premium to pay, especially for a less-than-thrilling design. Ed Hellwig
