COMO, Italy — Carrozzeria Touring, the famed Milanese coachbuilder now owned by Netherlands-based Zeta Europe, has revived the Touring Superleggera badge on a stunning new concept, the Maserati A8GCS Berlinetta. The two-seater was unveiled here Sunday at the Villa d'Este Concorso d'Eleganza.

Last week, we showed you images of the firm's Quattroporte-based Bellagio wagon. Its companion, the A8GCS, is based on the mechanicals of the Maserati GranSport coupe and was designed by Louis de Fabribeckers, the young Belgian who now heads up Touring's styling department.

The sleek coupe body is constructed of composite materials on a lightweight aluminum space frame. The A8GCS has been designed to meet international environmental and safety regulations, and Touring says the car "is able to enter small series production."

According to Italiaspeed.com, the company intends to display a running prototype of the A8GCS at the 2009 Geneva Auto Show, with an eye toward limited production.

Incidentally, the featured marque at this year's Consorso was Touring, which dates to 1926 and first collaborated with Maserati in 1957. Touring was acquired by Zeta in 2006.

What this means to you: It's gratifying to see the rebirth of a storied carrozzeria at a time when several of the major firms are struggling to survive. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
