Mahindra Unveils Scorpio Diesel Hybrid

    1 Rating
DETROIT — Indian automaker Mahindra & Mahindra has introduced a diesel-electric hybrid edition of its Scorpio utility vehicle, in cooperation with engine specialist FEV.

The 2.2-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel makes 114 horsepower and 199 pound-feet of torque and is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. The electric motor makes 40 hp and also produces 199 lb-ft. The vehicle stores energy in a nickel metal hydride battery pack.

Mahindra plans to introduce the Scorpio diesel hybrid initially in India and other Asian markets in 2009. The engine will be used in both the Scorpio and the Appalachian pickup in North America in 2010, according to distributor Global Vehicles USA.

What this means to you: Looks like an Indian automaker will beat both American and Japanese makers to market with a production diesel-hybrid vehicle. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
