Renault and Mahindra Part Company in India

NEW DELHI — Indian automaker Mahindra & Mahindra is pulling out of a deal with Renault and its Japanese affiliate Nissan to build a $1 billion assembly plant outside Chennai, although M&M will continue its partnership in building local versions of the Renault Logan in Nasik.

Another Indian vehicle manufacturer, Bajaj Auto, meanwhile affirmed its plans to co-develop with Renault and Nissan a $3,000 small car — dubbed "Logan Junior" by the media — for the Indian market. The inexpensive compact is being developed in direct response to Tata's $2,500 "people's car" that will be formally unveiled this week at the Auto Expo show here.

Tata expects to begin selling its small car by the end of this year. The Bajaj/Renault/Nissan compact, which will be produced at the Bajaj plant in Chakan, isn't expected to reach production before 2010.

M&M will continue to market the Logan under the Mahindra Renault brand. Production at the new southern plant is scheduled to begin in late 2009.
