OBERWALTERSDORF, Austria — The Mila Alpin is not the image that comes to mind when one pictures an all-terrain vehicle. Its shape is more Smart than Land Rover, but you'd be quite surprised at what it's capable of.

Austrian car manufacturer Magna Steyr is a subsidiary of Magna, the massive Canadian parts supplier. It is well known for special projects, and this is one of the most special yet. The outside of the Mila Alpin, Magna Steyr claims, was inspired by nature, with "lines...as clear as rock and ice." Metaphors aside, the shape certainly is different, looking like some sort of combination of a micro SUV and a camcorder. Nothing about it screams "off road," although it does boast a climbing ability of 45 degrees.

The Mila Alpin is midengine, all-wheel drive and has independent suspension with fairly impressive ground clearance. The panoramic roof gives supposedly "perfect" visibility for the passengers sitting in the 3+1 seating arrangement. It is also available as a hybrid, so you can climb those snow-capped mountains without melting them.

What this means to you: It may look a little quirky, but a small, cheap, Austrian off-roader isn't something you see every day. — Paul Tassi, Correspondent
