2006 Lotus Exige
What's Special About It?
Buy a Lotus Exige and you'll be in an exclusive club. Not just because there will only be about 300 examples imported to the States this year or because the Exige shares its chassis and powertrain (a 190-hp, 1.8-liter four and six-speed manual transmission) with the already renowned Lotus Elise. Nope, the Exige club is exclusive because of the way the diminutive Lotus stirs the soul of the most dedicated enthusiasts.
Exige owners will find the new-to-the-U.S. Lotus sharper than the Elise only above 100 mph where its additional front splitter, hardtop, engine cover and rear wing conspire to generate 90 pounds of downforce. Even though the Exige comes standard with the Elise's sport pack suspension, wheels and tires, it takes that kind of speed to distinguish any significant difference in their dynamics. However, the Exige's undeniably striking curves and readjusted proportions relative to the Elise are different. Its look is capable, mean and undiluted.
John English, president and CEO of Lotus Cars USA, said it best: "Those looking for automatic wipers need to look elsewhere." Amen, brother.
The Exige shares the many performance options available on the '06 Elise. Centered on improving the driving experience, they are traction control, track pack suspension with Bilstein dampers, a torque sensing limited-slip differential and air-conditioning delete which saves 22 pounds.
The Exige will be available at the end of this month with a base price of $50,990.
What's Edmunds' Take?
We can't think of any way to make the Exige more appealing. It's already light, fast and as sexy as Jessica Biel wearing whipped cream. We'll take ours in black. — Josh Jacquot
