NORFOLK, England — The Lotus Evora GTE will be the weapon of choice for the new Lotus Sport USA team.
The factory-backed Lotus Sport USA team will primarily focus on the GT2 and LMP2 classes in IMSA, the International Motor Sport Association, said Lotus in its announcement. Lotus said that a driver lineup and calendar of events will be released later.
"This part of the world represents a very important market to Group Lotus now and for the future," said Claudio Berro, Lotus director of motorsport, in a statement.
The team will kick off testing in the fourth quarter of this year, with an eye to racing the Lotus Evora GTE through a full North American and international schedule in 2012, said Lotus.
The Evora GTE is equipped with a 470-horsepower Toyota Cosworth V6 engine and weighs in at 2,744 pounds. The Evora GTE has been designed for GT2 and international endurance series racing.
Lotus said that the establishment of a new, locally run Lotus Sport USA team marks the return of Ian Dawson to the brand. Dawson was a member of the prestigious Team Lotus in the 1970s.
Inside Line says: Good news for American motorsport fans.
