NORFOLK, United Kingdom — Lotus Cars today released the first official photo of its Project Eagle midengine 2+2 sports car, scheduled to debut next week at the 2008 British Auto Show.

Project Eagle, whose production name will be announced at the British show, is the first of three new models included in Lotus CEO Mike Kimberley's five-year strategic business plan. The plan was first announced in October 2006. It is also the first all-new car from Lotus since it introduced the Elise in 1995.

Powered by a 276-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, Lotus says the new Eagle will run from zero to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds, with a top speed of 160 mph.

The new Lotus will also be sold as a two-seater, with the rear seating area reallocated to storage. Lotus says other versions are also in the works, including a convertible and an ultrahigh-performance model.

Project Eagle will go on sale in spring 2009 with only 2,000 vehicles produced each year.
