HETHEL, England — Lotus Engineering has announced that it will display the final cylinder-head design of an innovative low-emissions hybrid engine this week at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show.

The so-called Low CO2 engine is being jointly developed with Siemens VDO, which was recently acquired by German component supplier Continental. The complete engine — a supercharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder gas-electric unit — will be unveiled later this year in a Lotus demonstrator vehicle.

The partners are employing a number of advanced technologies to reduce CO2 emissions, including an integrated exhaust manifold design and cam-profile switching system (Lotus), as well as a high-pressure fuel pump and centrally mounted gasoline injectors (Siemens VDO).

Lotus said the primary objective of the project is "to deliver greatly reduced emissions while maintaining an engaging driving experience from an affordable set of technologies."

What this means to you: Leave it to Lotus to come up with a hybrid solution that's still fun to drive.
