DEARBORN, Michigan — Ford has announced that its all-new 2010 Lincoln MKT luxury crossover vehicle will offer a high-tech system called Active Park Assist. The new technology will help drivers automatically parallel-park at the touch of a button. The system also will be available in mid-2009 on the 2010 Lincoln MKS sedan, Ford said.
The Active Park Assist system combines electric power steering with an ultrasonic sensing system to automatically position and steer the vehicle into a parking space. Similar to the system offered on the Lexus LS 460 sedan, Ford's APA enables hands-free parking, although the Lexus system relies on a video camera rather than ultrasonic sensors.
Ford said it plans to fit nearly 90 percent of its new vehicles with electric power steering by 2012, enabling it to offer Active Park Assist on more models, along with such emerging technologies as Blind Spot Information System and Cross Traffic Alert.
