2008 Detroit Auto Show Preview: Lincoln MKT

SANTA MONICA, Calif. — In an innocuous story about recent trends in car names, the Los Angeles Times this weekend let it slip that the 2009 Lincoln MKT will make its debut at next week's 2008 Detroit Auto Show.

Although the Times does not describe the MKT, it's a safe bet the new vehicle will be Lincoln's version of the seven-passenger 2009 Ford Flex that debuted at the 2007 New York Auto Show.

Although the Flex is powered by Ford's familiar 260-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, the MKT may use Ford's new 270-hp 3.7-liter engine instead. The new V6 will make its first appearance in the 2009 MKS, Lincoln's new flagship sedan which debuted in November at the L.A. auto show.

What this means to you: If the breadbox styling of the Ford Flex doesn't appeal to you, Lincoln will get its own, more luxurious-looking version soon. — Kelly Toepke, News Editor
