Lincoln MK 9 Concept
What's special about it?
Lincoln is heading into a new direction, in terms of design, and produced the MK 9 Concept to gauge response to its new approach. Taking the strong, chrome-accented shoulder style first seen on the 1961 Lincoln Continental, old is blended with new as aluminum accents, front fender vents, wrap-over front light clusters and an Audi TT-like roof give the big coupe a modern and sporty flair.
Speaking of big, the MK 9 has a wheelbase of 121.9 inches and huge 22-inch alloy wheels along with 275/45R22 (front) and 295/40R22 (rear) tires that fill out the wheelwells. Under the flashy skin, however, is basic Town Car running gear, whose purpose is to allow the show car to be driven on and off transporters.
Inside the cabin are seats inspired by the Eames Lounge Chair, a plush piece of furniture still popular today, even though its design dates back nearly 50 years. More aluminum, leather floor covering and a translucent panel that sweeps down from the center of the dash into the console complete the interior's modern retro theme.
Why should you care?
The MK 9 shows the direction that Lincoln may take in terms of style. With an ever-increasing variety of vehicles being introduced every year, we can see the importance of a manufacturer wanting to have a look immediately identifiable as its own. However, in spite of this car having the MK 9 name (which would seem to succeed the Mark VIII), it's not slated to go into production. -- John DiPietro
