2008 Chicago Auto Show: Lexus Extends Ritzy Pebble Beach Collection to More Models

CHICAGO — Extending "exclusivity" seems to be something of an automotive oxymoron. But that's exactly what Lexus is doing by rolling out Pebble Beach Edition packages for more vehicles in its lineup.

Previously, Toyota's upscale brand only made the Pebble Beach Edition package available on the SC 430, one of the more expensive vehicles in its lineup. The 2008 Lexus SC 430 with the Pebble Beach Edition package is priced at $68,655, including a $795 destination charge. But starting in mid-February, buyers can order a Pebble Beach Edition on the Lexus RX 350. Expect to pay $42,175 for a front-wheel-drive RX 350 with the Pebble Beach Edition package and $43,575 for an all-wheel-drive RX 350 with the Pebble Beach Edition Package.

The RX 350 package adds such cosmetic touches as 18-inch wheels and chrome grille, a color-keyed rear spoiler, special badging and special interior trim. The RX 350 Pebble Beach Edition will be available in three colors: Classic Silver Metallic, Obsidian Black and Truffle Mica.

In mid-March, Lexus will roll out an ES 350 Pebble Beach Edition, followed by an LS 600h L Pebble Beach Edition in the fall. The automaker said a sixth version of the SC 430 Pebble Beach Edition will be introduced this summer.

The ES 350 Pebble Beach Edition gets seven-spoke 17-inch wheels with a liquid graphite finish. The cabin gets semi-aniline leather and a wood-and-leather steering wheel. Pricing has not yet been announced on the ES 350 Pebble Beach Edition.

Lexus owners who opt for the Pebble Beach models can also get goodies from one of three merchandising packages: the Callaway Golf Experience, a Travel Package or Epicurean Encounter. The goodies include such upscale items as personalized Callaway golf balls, a Viking cutlery set and luxury leather items.

What this means to you: Lexus takes its Pebble Beach Collection downmarket a bit, so that more of its customers can feel pampered. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
