    What is it?
    2002 Lexus SC 430 Convertible

    What's special about it?
This is Lexus' first dip into the convertible pool, the production manifestation of the luxurious concept vehicle first introduced at the 1999 Tokyo Auto Show. It's been designated "the Jewel of Lexus," and by preliminary looks it's a deserving title. Lexus still displayed the concept vehicle at New York, but the company did release further details about the production model.

A 4.3-liter V8 engine -- the same seamless one powering the redesigned LS 430 on sale this fall -- cranks out 300 horsepower and is linked to a five-speed automatic transmission. Eighteen-inch wheels are standard. As this car was designed as a convertible, torsional rigidity remains solid whether or not the top is raised. A one-touch button will release the aluminum hardtop from the trunk, and the graceful motion in itself is worthy of applause. There's plenty of space -- even with the top stored in the trunk, there's room enough for a fair amount of stowage -- and, lo and behold, we see a back seat for a couple of diminutive friends.

True to its luxury status, the interior is swathed in leather and wood which must have been measured out in acreage for sheer copiousness. The hedonist will appreciate the navigation system and a nine-speaker Mark Levinson sound system, the controls of which are hidden by an electronic door.

    Why should you care?
This new and beautiful iteration will replace the aging SC 400. It won't be sorely missed. Top up or down, the 430 retains its sinuous lines and refined character. Even those who scoff at the sedateness of the Lexus lines will feel a quickening of the heartbeat. If you have the means, line up now -- it'll be in showrooms by March of 2001.

I feel really proud to own such a car.  I hope my head doesn't swell too much after reading this article.  It really is a great car and darn it, it just feels great to drive.
