TOKYO — There are good car configurators and there are great car configurators. The comprehensive new online configurator for the just-launched Lexus LFA should satisfy the desires of nearly every would-be owner on the planet.

Start your fantasy journey at the Lexus LFA Web site and click on your part of the globe. The configurator takes you to a simple opening screen that can provide background and milestones on the new nearly $400,000 supercar or whisk you directly to the task at hand. Choices on the left-hand column include a gallery, with images and video; product info, including specifications and pricing; and the heart of the matter — the actual vehicle configurator.

Choose from exterior or interior. The former will step through a series of choices, starting with exterior colors. The palette is rich, with a wide assortment of standard colors (Whitest White, Pearl White, Metallic Silver, Pearl Gray, Pearl Brown, Pearl Blue, Pearl Yellow, Pearl Red, Red, Black, Ivory White, Mint Green and Aqua) and special-order hues (Passionate Pink, Sunset Orange, Lapis Lazuli, Black Amethyst, Brownstone, Crystal Gold, Lime Green, Steel Blue and Lavender).

Cyber tire kickers can also spec one of three wheel options and six brake caliper colors.

Obsessive-compulsive types will want to move directly to the interior section, which includes a choice of leather or Alcantara upholstery in various colors for seatback and seat front, choice of colors for stitching, steering wheel, carpet, headliner, door panel, center console and metal trim.

Of course, the interior, like the exterior, can be viewed from several angles and perspectives. There is also a Save+View option, as well as a provision for downloading an e-brochure.

Inside Line says: For fans of Japanese sports cars, perhaps the ultimate fantasy Web site. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent

In any configuration there is just too much ugly and money involved.
