2002 Lexus IS 300 manual 5spd and 2002 Lexus IS 300 SportCross Wagon
What's special about them?
Hooray! The IS 300 will soon be available with a manual transmission! Auto enthusiasts with an aversion to the blue and white propeller badge are rejoicing everywhere! Well.perhaps that's an overstatement. Nonetheless, the option of a five-speed manual transmission will most likely secure this impressive sport sedan's position as a 3 Series fighter.
The IS 300 with a manual tranny will boast a slightly firmer suspension than the automatic model. This, coupled with what Lexus claims is a "crisply shifting" five-speed manual transmission, will assure that eager drivers extract maximum performance from the 215-horsepower, six-cylinder engine. It will be available in September of this year.
As an added bonus (and a well-kept secret on the part of Lexus officials), IS 300 will also be made available in wagon form. The IS 300 SportCross will provide 21.9 cubic feet of cargo capacity and may succeed in drawing market share away from the BMW 323i and 325i, as well as the Audi A4 Avant. Unfortunately, it will not be available with the manual transmission. Those who desire utility can buy the SportCross beginning in August 2001.
Why should you care?
Solid performance and a sporty character have already identified the IS 300 as an anomaly of the Lexus marque and a viable alternative to BMW's venerable 3 Series. With the introduction of these two versions - one for enthusiasts, and one for more practical-minded folk Lexus is proving that it doesn't pull any punches.
