DETROIT — The 2010 Lexus HS 250h made its official debut at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, promising to be an affordable hybrid choice for entry-level luxury buyers. The HS 250h is slated to arrive in showrooms in late summer, the automaker confirmed.
Preliminary specifications for the fourth gas-electric hybrid in the Lexus lineup did not include fuel economy numbers. The EPA has yet to list official numbers for any 2010 vehicles, either. Lexus said "the HS 250h sedan's expected fuel efficiency will be more than 30 percent better than the most fuel-efficient model currently in the Lexus lineup."
The five-passenger hybrid gets Lexus' first four-cylinder gasoline engine, a 2.4-liter power plant that generates 187 horsepower. It is linked to a continuously variable transmission.
Lexus did not announce pricing, but the HS 250h is expected to be the upscale Toyota brand's most affordable hybrid — priced below the $57,225 Lexus GS 450h.
Lexus said the HS 250h slots in between its IS and ES sedans.
Other details include standard 17- and optional 18-inch wheels, electric power steering and standard leather-trim seats.
Inside Line says: Here's hoping the price for the HS 250h is well south of $50K. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
