Lexus HPX
What's Special About It?
As long as and wider than its LS 430 flagship sedan, Lexus' HPX Concept is a high-performance crossover vehicle, hence the HPX name. The greenhouse bears a strong resemblance to Infiniti's FX45 which also happens to be a high-performance crossover. A few exterior styling elements, such as the center-opening "suicide" doors, smoothly flared fenders and LED lighting for the head and taillights set the HPX apart from its potential competition.
Loosely based on the GS 430 sport sedan platform, the HPX's chassis uses Lexus' 4.3-liter V8 (good for 300 horsepower) which sends power to all four wheels through a five-speed automatic. An aggressive stance comes by way of 21-inch alloys (wearing 265/50 front and 295/45 rear performance tires) that are pushed out to the corners. A height-adjustable suspension allows the HPX to hunker down on the pavement while strafing apexes.
Instead of a steering wheel, the HPX has what looks like the yoke of an airplane, most appropriate considering the design team's goal of having the HPX's cabin evoke the cabin of an executive jet. The instrument displays can be configured to the driver's preference, allowing the readouts to be adjusted in size, color and even position. Taking the place of rear- and side-view mirrors are tiny cameras that send images to a display on the dash. Seating for six four adults (in four bucket seats) and two children (in the third row) is provided in the muscular crossover.
Why Should You Care?
We're not sure you should, as the Lexus brass stated that there are no plans for production of the HPX. John DiPietro
