- A replacement for Land Rover's flagship Range Rover is due next year.
- The current design will be 10 years old in 2012.
- The next Range Rover will borrow styling cues from the smaller Evoque.
LONDON — A replacement for Land Rover's flagship Range Rover is due next year, when the current design will be 10 years old. As part of a major overhaul, the fourth-generation model will move even further upmarket than today's Range Rover.
Company sources tell Inside Line the next-generation Range Rover will soften its traditional boxy look and borrow styling cues from the recently launched Evoque.
Expect the Range Rover's 2012 successor to retain the "floating" roof, but the parallel lines that make up the upper and lower side window lines will converge, as they do on the Evoque. One insider also says the windshield will be "faster" — in other words, a bit more raked.
Also look for higher base pricing, and a design and platform that can stretch to far higher levels, with conviction, than today — potentially up to $200,000 or more.
In the U.S., the current Range Rover is priced from around $80,000, with the top-of-the-line Autobiography edition fetching as much as $130,000 with custom paint and other accessories.
Inside Line says: Land Rover executives are quite aware of Bentley's plans to launch a premium SUV off the Cayenne/Touareg platform, and plan to be ready for it.

Let's not forget the recently departed Mercedes Benz G wagon, God rest its soul.

I sort of understand them wanting to go more upmarket to compete with Bentley but, the brands are so different, i just dont see them being on par even if they are both 200k SUVs (in respect to quality and brand prestige). Land Rover is obviously a well known name in the luxury SUV offerings, but do they see Bentley as enough of a threat to want to make a new price point for such a well selling vehicle? Its like they might as well come out with a separate model all together and not bother with pulling the RR away from customers who aren't quite in the Bentley price range.
Tho the trend it seems is to move up a class, so why not do that just fine and still maintain a similar price. i.e With the Jeep GC starting almost exactly where the one it replaced (while being worlds better) why bother cutting out customers with a price hike. Unless they plan to slot in a new RR vehicle to expand the line and do it up as a subsidiary brand.
For what its worth, its a shame to know the square look of the RR will be going soft. I always hoped they would keep the design language, like MINI or Porsche, to keep in touch with the classic styling.

The interior of current model is so cheap looking the only thing expensive about it is the price. This news reminds me of an Aston Martin Cygnet version of Ford Explorer.

Its about time. I must say this SUV's refresh kept it looking good over the years. I sat in a 2011 Range at an auto show last year, and the interior seating area was tight for a vehicle of the size. The BMW X5 five had surprisingly way more leg room. It also lacked a panoramic sunroof, no third row and no power lift gate.
All that said, the Range Rover is the best looking SUV inside and out at any price range. I wish BMW would have held on to the brand. Just imagine this SUV with the V8 twin turbo and some BMW handling dynamics.

And it will still be an unreliable piece of junk that's mostly purchased by pretentious morons who wouldn't dream of taking them off road.
And you want to talk about depreciation? WOW!
No thanks.

". . .the next-generation Range Rover will soften its traditional boxy look. . ." and ". . .will move even further upmarket than today's Range Rover."
Then it ceases to be a Range Rover. It becomes a taller Rolls Royce.
The Toyota Land Cruiser is using the same philosophy too.
And the Jeep Grand Cherokee.
