The 2012 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque looks much like the concept vehicle it was based on thanks to its high belt line and wrap around glass. | October 20, 2010

    Land Rover LR2
    • 2014 Land Rover LR2: Fully redesigned back in 2008, the LR2 isn't expected to get any serious upgrades until around 2013.

    Land Rover LR4
    • 2013 Land Rover LR4: After a heavy makeover in 2010, the LR4 will have to wait a couple of years for a full redesign.

    • 2012 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque: This two-door "urban off-roader" is based on the LRX concept shown at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show. It will be built on the same platform as the LR2 and use a 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 240 horsepower and drives all four wheels. Both two- and four-door versions of the Range Rover Evoque will be offered. A hybrid drivetrain is also in the works.

    • 2013 Land Rover Range Rover: A full redesign of Land Rover's flagship model is expected to arrive by 2012. Most speculation points toward the use of a new aluminum chassis to save weight, and given Jaguar's experience building the aluminum XJ sedan, applying it to the big Rover isn't too far-fetched. Styling will most likely remain consistent with the current model as will the drivetrain choices and off-road ability.

I'd like to offer an anectdotal counterpoint to the above comment.

I'm on my 4th LR, having had a Disco I, a Disco II, an LR3, and now an LR4. All were in highest trim level (e.g. HSE Lux + on current model)

I also own a few german and other english makes, but again, this is a purely sugjective review.

I have found quality improvements from model to model to be surprisingly large, even between the LR3 and LR4. While I heard various horror stories about Discos, I only had one major issue (hydraulic suspension failure on DIsco II around 50k miles) I heard less and experienced none with the LR trucks, and have enjoyed both LR3 and LR4 largely without anything going wrong, beyond a faulty satteilite radio wire in the LR4, which was replaced under warranty in one, day, with a courtesy truck provided... hardly worth shrieking about.

What's been more notable is the huge improvement in interior quality between LR3 and 4. I'd bought the original 3 because it's cavernous and square backside accomodated a tremendous amount of toys, hassle free, and was excellent in the modest off roading I do to get to various launch sites, etc. Iwas underwhelmed with it's pedestrian interiror. The LR4 has remedied that, with tons of (so far) largely problem free bells and whistles, great quality, fi & finish, and comfort. Meanwhile, the original utilioty and ruggedness remain, unabated.

Given the huge differences between the Disco Chasis and the LRs, I'd disagree with the above post that they are simply rebadged (unlike LR3-4, frankly)... and that you get a very cacious truck, with tons of comfort, silence, and convenience, for yes... a large chunk of change. for some of it, it was worth it, and certainly not a tradeoff in terms of quality.

I'm surprised that no one has commented on LR's lack of overall quality & reliability. Well, let me be the first. I'll just start off by saying that if Land Rover is going to dabble in hybrids & electric designs, they should first improve the reliability of the engines they currently mass produce. In the past LR engines have been known for their head gasket issues and cooling system woes. Not to mention horrible electronics & the fact that you would have to be an extremely wealthy person just to maintain one. By the way a note to Land Rover, renaming what we all know is the Discovery doesn't hide the fact that it is still piece of crap on four wheels with a 55,000+ price tag. I do admit, they look beautiful on the outside but buyer beware!!
