Land Rover Introduces Freelander 2 Commercial

GAYDON, England — Even after being deemed the "ride of the Rajas" by Ratan Tata, Land Rover returns to its roots and ups the utility capability of its pint-size SUV with the bulkier Freelander 2 Commercial.

"Since the launch of the Freelander 2 in November 2006, there has been high demand for a commercial derivative from our customers and dealers. The Commercial offers supreme load-space capability together with levels of ride, handling, comfort and equipment which will further redefine the compact 4x4 commercial segment," said John Edwards, Land Rover managing director.

Recognized as the LR2 in the U.S., the Commercial version of the Freelander 2 will be available in S and XS trims and is fitted with most of the standard goodies, minus rear seats and side airbags. Additions include a full-height solid bulkhead with mesh panel, floor support frame, fixed rear side glass, rubber load-space mat, side window guards and rear cargo lighting.

The XS version comes equipped with Land Rover's Terrain Response system, 17-inch alloy rims, power-fold mirrors, a full-size spare and partial leather trim. The Freelander 2 Commercial goes on sale this month and prices begin at the equivalent of $41,265, with the XS version starting at $50,840.

What this means to you: It's true: Some people actually use Land Rovers for utility purposes. — Mike Lysaght, Correspondent
