    What is it?
Land Rover Freelander Kalahari and Freelander Kensington

    What's special about them?
In preparation for the North American launch of the Freelander small sport-utility vehicle, Land Rover presented two concept offerings, the Freelander Kalahari and the Freelander Kensington. The differences between the concepts and the production vehicle are, for the most part, stylistic.

Freelander Kalahari comes in a warm Molten Orange, with a matte black hood and semi-matte black bumpers, wheel arch cladding and rear lower door panel. The result is an eye-catching yet brilliant exterior. Inside, Kalahari features black leather-trimmed seats with canvas facings and Molten Orange detail stitching. Other black and orange leather accents include the steering wheel, gearshift knob, handbrake grip and door grabs. A few of Kalahari's more rugged amenities are an A-frame nudge bar, heavy-duty towing receiver, removable winch with accessory kit, roof-mounted rear floodlights and lower bumper fog lights.

The Freelander Kensington concept is shoed with 18-inch wheels (1-inch larger than Kalahari) and comes with a monochromatic Black Cherry paint job with the exception of Titanium Silver detailing on the grille and lower bumper. Its interior leather trim is comparable to that of the Kalahari but comes in dual-tone black and tan with tan stitching. Kensington's premium Harman Kardon sound system features a single CD player and rear-mounted subwoofer.

    Why should you care?
Land Rover's Freelander has long been the best-selling sport utility in Europe and the automaker expects it to be their most popular model in North America. With its realistic price range (under $30,000) compared to Land Rover's other models and the growing popularity of mini-utes, they may well be right. Fortunately, this is one cute-ute that will probably deliver competent off-road performance. The Kalahari and Kensington concepts likely represent specialty trim level options for the Freelander in the future.
