    Just the Facts:
    • Lamborghini names a special edition of its outgoing Gallardo to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy.
    • The Gallardo Tricolore features a tri-colored stripe — denoting the colors of the Italian flag — running the length of the body.
    • The tri-color motif also is picked up as a stripe on the driver seat.

    SANT'AGATA BOLOGNESE, Italy — Ferrari said its latest F1 racecar was named to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy. Now it's being joined by supercar rival Lamborghini, which next week will formally unveil the Gallardo Tricolore, sporting the colors of the Italian flag.

    The Gallardo Tricolore features a tri-colored stripe running the length of the body, as well as on the driver seat.

    News of the special edition, as well as an official image, was leaked Thursday on several Italian Web sites, notably OmniAuto.it.

    This marks the second limited-edition Gallardo this year. In late January, Lamborghini unveiled the Gallardo Bicolore, rendered in a two-tone exterior finish, with matching interior accents.

    Guess you missed the Balboni Edition, eh??

    Anyways, this car is cool. I've always been a fan of automakers displaying their flag colors in stripes or trim.

    I'd kill for a black GT2 RS w/ a black/red/yellow stripe running the length of it. Combined w/ the red wheels, and the default yellow PCCB calipers. Oh yes.

    while I understand the significance behind this special edition, I'm not that excited about it.  I'm just waiting for a Gallardo SV

    So how much does that stripe cost you over a regular Gallardo?

    @jackson611..

    I completely understand the difference, in fact, I agree completely that Ford blew the whole F-150 naming way way out of proportion.  Of course, there is no way the two would be confused and this was not my point at all.

    My point was that Mr. Maserati was suggesting that the Ford nomenclature for the F series pickups had no history and meaning which it clearly does.  It wasn't really an arbitrary number that was made-up years ago.

    That stripe is glorious. It looks like the learned the power of a good stripe from the Balboni edition.

    @thedream21479:

    Obviously you don't really understand the difference between a production car and a Formula1 car. NOBODY will ever hear the comment "Well if they had decided to change the F150 from intermediates to slicks earlier they may have had a shot at winning the race," and think that somebody was thinking of a Ford. Also NOBODY will ever hear "I need to take my F150 to HomeDepot and pick up some lumber" and think that Fernando Alonso is going to take a Formula 1 car to pick up some 2x4s and deck screws.

    It is plausible that a LeMans road car (whether GM or Audi) could be confused with one another, especially given that they are both sporty and 2 door.

    The actions of Ford are even more needless given that the F150 is mainly an American car, while the Ferrari F150 will almost never be seen stateside, whether on TV or in real life.

    I thought Ferrari was commemorating Ford's sales success in the pickup market.

    Good idea, but Italian cars don't do anything for me.
    Now, if they made an SLS, SLR, or R8, with German colors down the stripe, I would orgasm and play the lottery until I could afford it.

    Mr. Maserati, you obviously don't know your Ford history.  The Ford "F" series pickups have been around since the the mid 1900's.  The numerical designation after the "F" has always reflected the GWVR rating of the particular pickup (starting with the original F1 model)  The 150 now designates a 1/2 ton pickup in Ford methodology.    So clearly Ford has "history and meaning" behind it.

    Yes, I agree that the hoopla over Ferrari and Ford is overblown, but this isn't the first or the last time it will happen between manufacturers.  Audi wanted to originally call the R8 the LeMans, but GM balked because they owned the rights to (Pontiac) LeMans.
