LOS ANGELES — Lamborghini has provided a sneak peek at its latest evolutionary model, the Gallardo LP570-4 Spyder Performante, at a private showing in Los Angeles.

Essentially a soft-top companion to the Gallardo Superleggera, the LP570-4 Spyder Performante shares its 562-horsepower 5.2-liter V10, which can be equipped with Lamborghini's e-gear semi-automatic or six-speed manual transmission. The Spyder Performante jets from zero to 60 mph in less than 3.9 seconds, reaching a top speed of just over 200 mph.

The Spyder Performante has shed 143 pounds, largely through extensive use of carbon fiber inside and out, in such areas as the engine/transmission cover, rear spoiler, sills, diffuser and underbody panels, as well as inner door panels, seat shells and center tunnel cover.

The car borrows its lightweight 19-inch wheels from the Gallardo Superleggera, mounting Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires — 235/35R19 in front and 295/30R19 in the rear.

Changes to the exterior are subtle: a revised front bumper, reworked side sills and a redesigned rear diffuser shrouding four oversize exhaust pipes. Among the options are a large rear spoiler and carbon-ceramic brakes.

The Gallardo LP570-4 Spyder Performante gets a hand-stitched, suede-wrapped steering wheel, and customers can order a carbon-fiber package that bundles trim for the center console, instrument panel, steering wheel, door handles and parking brake handle.

Inside Line says: If the Italians were aiming for truth in advertising, they would simply christen this car the Gallardo Spyder Costoso. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
