IRVINE, California — Kia continues the onslaught of its special-edition Soul models, rolling out the 2010 Kia Shadow Dragon Soul on Tuesday. This special model starts at $18,890, including a $695 destination charge.

The Shadow Dragon Soul commands a $3,245 premium over the base Soul+ on which it is based. The base Soul+ starts at $15,645, including shipping.

Kia continues to ladle on the amenities with the special-edition Soul models. The newest Soul special edition features black leather-trimmed seats, the first leather seating available on a Soul. The appearance package bundles a deep shadow black exterior paint job with black 18-inch wheels, a body-color spoiler and high-gloss black accents on the front and rear bumper inserts.

Kia notes that the Shadow Dragon Soul is patterned after the Kia Soul Burner concept that debuted at the 2008 Geneva Auto Show. That concept generated "a slew of positive feedback from Soul forums and Internet chats," said Kia Motors America in a statement.

The whole campaign for the Kia Soul was a Soul driving though streets with giant hamsters on giant wheels. The payoff was that the Soul was being driven by a giant hamster. Not sure what they were trying to say, but my kids loved the commercial.

They're just carrying over their branding.

Ugly style, dumb sticker, a name that only people covered in tribal tattoos would love and not that special. Not sure who buys "special edition" cars these days.

The name "Kia" derives from the Sino-Korean words ki ("which means hamster drive") and a (which stands for "happiness"), it is roughly translated as "Hamster love to drive". Named after the ninja hamster that started the company with the first hamster wheels in 1944 then evolving later to automobiles. (I hope someone out there is dumb enough to quotes this I really do) . . . Something to do with their marketing campaign for the Soul, that's why they have the rodent.
