2008 Paris Auto Show Preview: 2009 Kia Soul

SEOUL, South Korea — Kia has released technical details about its upcoming Soul hatchback, which makes its world premiere at the 2008 Paris Auto Show on October 2. The five-door will come with three different engines — two of which are similar to the engines currently in use in the Europe-market Kia cee'd.

A 1.6-liter gasoline and a 1.6-liter diesel engine with a variable geometry turbocharger, or VGT, will be based on the cee'd power plant. There will also be a 2.0-liter gasoline engine in some markets, Kia said.

The front-wheel-drive hatchback will go into production in Korea in November and will go on sale in Europe in February. The U.S. will get the all-new model starting next April.

What this means to you: The boxy little car should be greeted with open arms by style- and fuel-conscious buyers. — Laura Sky Brown, Correspondent
