2008 Geneva Auto Show: Kia Soul

GENEVA — Kia has unveiled three new concept versions of its upcoming Soul hatchback, along with a green concept based on its European Cee'd compact.

Kia's European design team created the Soul Diva, the Soul Burner and the Soul Searcher specifically for the 2008 Geneva Auto Show. The final production version of the Soul is scheduled to make its world debut this fall at the Paris auto show and will go on sale in various markets, including North America shortly after that.

The Soul Diva is aimed at young, style-conscious females. Highlighted by a full-length tinted glass panoramic roof, the Soul Diva is upholstered in glossy black imitation leather with quilted stitching. The cabin features deep-pile carpet and has been designed to provide the feel of a lounge.

The Soul Burner is strictly a youth-mobile, finished in black satin with dragon tattoos. Exterior details include LED driving lights and twin vertical exhaust pipes. Inside, the cabin gets four individual sport seats and is trimmed in deep black and matte red.

The Soul Searcher aims to exude an air of Korean culture, as well as calm and tranquility, with its aged-leather finish and gray-beige felt upholstery. Features include a power-folding roof and tailgate panel.

The eco_cee'd concept introduces green technologies that will find their way into production from December 2008 on cars equipped with Kia's 115-horsepower 1.6-liter CRDi four-cylinder turbodiesel. The aim is to create versions of the Cee'd with even better fuel economy and lower emissions. Kia says the eco_cee'd delivers up to 60 mpg in combined driving.

What this means to you: The Soul has been a long time gestating — long enough that target Scion has seen its sales erode over the past year. Which raises interesting questions about Kia's launch timing. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
