What is it?
2007 Kia Sorento

What's special about it?
More power, that's the kind of announcement we like to hear, and Len Hunt, Kia's charismatic executive vice president and chief operating officer, didn't disappoint.

At the New York auto show, Hunt announced that the 2007 Kia Sorento will get an all-aluminum 3.8-liter V6 engine with 262 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. That's a whopping 36-percent increase in power over the SUV's previous 3.5-liter V6. There's also a new electronically controlled five-speed transmission that allows drivers to switch between automatic and manual shifts.

The new powertrain helps the midsize SUV, which employs a rugged body-on-frame construction, to increase its towing capacity to a class-leading 5,000 pounds. Two- or four-wheel drive is offered.

Available in LX and EX trims with upgrades to LX Sport or EX Luxury packages, the Sorento features redesigned front headlamps with projection lights, a revised front grille insert, new front fascia and bumper, more rounded body-side cladding, redesigned taillamps and a rear fascia with reflector inserts. Larger 17-inch wheels and an option for black cloth or black leather come with the LX Sport.

Updates to the cabin include a new center fascia, gauge cluster and floor console, upscale wood and metal trim materials, and revised steering-wheel-mounted cruise and audio controls.

Kia has also added to the Sorento's list of safety equipment, making advanced two-stage airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, electronic stability control, traction control and a tire-pressure-monitoring system standard across the Sorento model line.

What's Edmunds' take?
The new engine, new interior and extensive list of safety equipment should be enough for the Kia Sorento to better take on the smaller and weaker Honda CR-V. Kia's 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty doesn't hurt either. — Kelly Toepke
