IRVINE, California — The redesigned 2012 Kia Rio sedan starts at $14,150, including a $750 destination charge, reflecting a $1,160 price hike over the outgoing model. Pricing was announced on Tuesday.

When the 2012 Kia Rio sedan debuted in the spring at the 2011 New York Auto Show, Kia told Inside Line that it intended to price the vehicle under $13,000. The 2011 Kia Rio sedan starts at $12,990, including a $695 destination charge.

The top-of-the-line 2012 Kia Rio SX sedan starts at $18,250, including shipping. The SX model gets such items as standard metal pedals, LED front accents lights, LED taillights, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, power-folding outside mirrors, illuminated vanity mirrors, and a voice-activated infotainment system with rear camera display.

The 2012 Kia Rio sedan is new from the ground up, riding on a platform that is longer, wider and lower than the outgoing model.

The 2012 Kia Rio gets a new 138-horsepower 1.6-liter GDI four-cylinder engine linked to either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic. The outgoing model is equipped with an older 110-hp 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine linked to either a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic.

The EPA says the 2012 Rio returns 30 mpg in city driving and 40 mpg on the highway.

Inside Line says: The EPA says that you'll save $151 in annual fuel costs with the 2012 Kia Rio sedan versus the old one — so that should be some consolation.

Who's the ugliest of them all??? The Honda Fit. 'Nuff said.

In terms of design, Hyundai's Accent and Veloster are at the top of this class at the moment.

I'd rather get a Hyundai Accent.  You are right, this car is ugly.  It is something about the proportions of the front grill and headlight shape.  The new Kia design language doesn't look pleasing on a subcompact.
