2003 Kia Rio
What's special about it?
Kia makes a number of improvements to its little price-leader in several important areas. A 10 percent increase in output from the 1.6-liter DOHC four yields a total of 105 horsepower, and bigger brakes are fitted as well. A larger front sway bar installation promises more composed handling and a reduction in noise and vibration comes by way of new engine mounts and exhaust tuning.
Rio enthusiasts will be able to spot the newest model thanks to a revised front end on both sedan and Cinco (four-door hatchback) models that features a more upscale grille and headlight treatment. Sedan models also get a revised tail with new taillights. A nice upgrade to the cabin is a height adjustment for the driver seat -- uncommon in this low-buck class.
Why should you care?
Kia proves that it is not simply relying on the Rio's "lowest-priced sedan in America" status to serve as the car's chief attraction, as these changes for 2003 indicate -- John DiPietro
