WASHINGTON — Kia is recalling 70,115 2006-'08 Kia Optimas with automatic transmissions because a problem with the shift cable could cause the car to roll when it is parked, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
"There is a possibility that the shift cable may have been installed incorrectly, causing tension in the cable," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "If present, this condition could cause the cable to detach from the shifter assembly's dowel pin, preventing the transmission from being shifted. The shift lever can then be moved into the Park position while the vehicle's transmission is still in the last gear used before detachment.
"If the driver leaves the vehicle without engaging the parking brake, there is a possibility that the vehicle can roll, injure a person in its path or cause a crash."
In other documentation filed with the federal government, Kia says that customers are advised to always engage the parking brake when putting the aforementioned Optima in the Park position until it can be fixed.
"This condition has not been creating real-world safety incidents," said Kia. "However, (Kia) has concluded that under extraordinary circumstances, a significant vehicle rolling event could potentially occur."
It said that there have been no reported injuries related to this condition.
The recall is expected to begin sometime this month.
Kia dealers will inspect the shift cable and reinstall it, if necessary. Owners can contact Kia at (800) 333-4542.

Having been trained to drive in Europe, I use the handbrake a lot. This causes total bafflement to nearly all of my American male friends. The girls here seem to use the handbrake a lot more.

I agree dr1ve4fun. For a FWD car, the parking brake locks the rear and the parking pawl holds the front. Much better than just using a tiny parking pawl to hold a 2 ton car.

This is why I will never understand why most people that have an automatic don't use their parking brakes. It's in the car for a reason.
