Top-down fun in a Kia? It might be hard to believe now, but with concepts like this one Kia is clearly thinking ahead to a time when such a car could become a reality. | September 15, 2009

    What's Special About It?
You'll never guess which automaker was showing this sleek and cool-looking sports car at the Tokyo Motor Show. Granted it looks more like something we'd see from Honda or Nissan, but this open-top, two-seat sports car is actually a Kia concept. With obvious Italian styling cues, the KCV-3 almost looks like (dare we say it?) a baby Lamborghini. The concept has a power-folding hardtop similar to that found on the Lexus SC 430 but we doubt that feature would make it to the production version of the KCV-3, should there be one.

Power comes from a 2.0-liter inline four making about 145 horsepower. The sporty Kia also has four-wheel disc brakes and a huge rear spoiler. The interior is jazzed up by brushed aluminum and plenty of leather. Given the Hyundai/Kia relationship, is it possible a car similar to this one based on the Tiburon platform is in the works? Only time will tell.

    Why Should You Care?
Kia is a rising star and all too eager to ditch its "budget compacts only" image. With cars like the Optima, Sorrento and Sedona, the KCV-3 or something like it could add an extra dash of cool to the Kia image. — Brian Moody
