IRVINE, California — The 2010 Kia Forte sedan will be priced starting at $14,390 for the basic Forte LX, ranging up to $17,890 for the range-topping Forte SX. Prices include a $695 shipping charge.

The Forte compact replaces last year's Spectra in Kia's U.S. lineup. The 2009 Spectra was priced from $14,200, ranging up to $17,100.

For 2010, Kia is also offering a mid-level Forte EX, priced from $16,490. The Forte EX with Fuel Economy package has a sticker of $18,090 and comes bundled with a five-speed automatic, special silica tires, a "smart" alternator and exterior aero enhancements. That model is rated by the EPA at 27 mpg in the city and 36 on the highway — two mpg higher than the standard Forte with five-speed manual.

Kia offers an optional four-speed automatic on the Forte LX for $1,000. The Forte SX comes with a standard six-speed manual and a larger, 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine; it can also be ordered with a five-speed automatic.

Inside Line says: Even though it's a brand-new car, the Forte is barely more expensive than the old Spectra. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
