Aimed at the Ford Explorer and other truck-based SUVs of that ilk, the Borrego is well-equipped for battle with a new DOHC 4.6-liter V8 rated at more than 300 horsepower and mated to a new six-speed automatic transmission. Available in two- and four-wheel drive, the Borrego can tow up to 7,500 pounds with the V8 and 5,000 pounds with the standard 3.8-liter V6.
The big Kia also boasts a third row of seats, with accommodations for up to seven occupants. The Borrego rides on a 114-inch wheelbase and measures 192.1 inches long overall — dimensions that are within an inch or two of the Explorer.
Underneath is a full frame with independent coil-spring front and rear suspension. Four-wheel disc brakes with antilock, electronic stability and traction control and a tire pressure monitoring system are standard, as are full-length side curtain airbags for all three rows.
The cabin is well appointed with such available features as power-adjustable pedals, rear back-up camera, fold-flat second- and third-row seats (the second row also slides) and a 600-watt Infinity audio system with six-disc CD changer, Sirius Satellite Radio, DVD navigation and USB/iPod inputs.
What this means to you: At this rate, Kia's going to run out of Southwestern names in short order. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
