Kia Introduces Minivan with a Bang

February 7, 1998 -- For a small company, Kia Motors America made a big splash at the 90th Chicago Auto Show Thursday when they unveiled their third and newest edition to the Kia line: a minivan. As of yet, it hasn't been named, but the minivan will go on sale next year as the MY2000.

We didn't think it was possible for any company, but Kia seems to have built a minivan that is actually kinda "cute." With seating for eight, two rear sliding doors, and a round, bubbly appearance, the MY2000 puts the fun back into family vehicles.

Built on a front-wheel drive platform, the minivan features front bucket seats with a pass-through all the way to the back, a sliding power sunroof and a power adjustable driver's seat.

A 2.5-liter DOHC V-6 engine delivering 173 horsepower at 6500 rpm sits under the hood. Keeping safety in mind, Kia inserted dual airbags, antilock brakes and integral crush zones.

While the Sportage is a mini sport-ute, this new vehicle is full-sized. Boasting 192.5 inches in length and a 114-inch wheelbase, the MY2000 also has a roof rack, rear spoiler and built-in bumper guards.
